Perfect (1985) - 5/10

We’re in New York (to start) in the 80s, very 80s. Adam (John Travolta), is a reporter working for Rolling Stone, always looking for a story. He’s got one on the go that’s being a little illusive, based around America’s Cold War obsession, but he’s got another idea, the latest craze of finding love at the health club, cue a boat load of lycra, like I said, very 80s. The two stories are an odd mix, one trying to add weight to the rather frivolous second, but this is where the action is. Enter Jessie (Jamie Lee Curtis), she’s an aerobic instructor, the star aerobic instructor at a club in LA that Adam finds himself focusing on. That’s not all he’s focused on. Again, a lot of lycra. He thinks she’s a good angle on his story, she’s not interested. In the story anyway. There’s a lot of extended aerobic sequences, with lots of thrusting, sweating and banging 80s pop. It’s probably not supposed to be funny, but it is. As are the weird cameos from Carly Simon and a load of Boy George impersonators, again very 80s. I was expecting this to be braindead crap, but it’s not as bad as the poster and ratings suggest. It’s not great either, but it’s functional. Adam’s journalistic tactics get him in trouble with both his stories, turning his world upside down. Travolta is good, so is Curtis. The rest of the cast are a bit ropey, although hardheaded photographer Frankie (Anne DeSalvo) is good too. The music is fun and stick around for the end credits. Surprisingly enjoyable.
